15 April 2025First published in 1791, the Memoirs of Serjeant Donald Macleod gives an insight into the life of a Highland soldier in the Scottish regiments. Born into the MacLeods of Ulinish on the Isle of Skye in 1688, Donald enlisted in The Royal Scots in 1699 and for seven decades was involved in most of Britain’s wars, ending his soldiering in New York in 1776 during the American War of Independence.
In his 103rd year Donald dictated his Memoirs. The book met with high acclaim and sold out quickly. It was re-printed the same year with additions.
