The President at Dunvegan Castle
Welcome to the Clan MacLeod Society of Scotland
The Society was founded in 1891, in Edinburgh and Glasgow as The Clan MacLeod Society.
Membership
Today the Society is open to anyone anywhere who has an interest in the Clan MacLeod no matter what surname they have. In the early 20th Century other Clan MacLeod Societies were established overseas. In 1961 we became the Clan MacLeod Society of Scotland on the formation of the international umbrella organisation, the Associated Clan MacLeod Societies (ACMS). Now there are societies in nine countries outwith Scotland but we are the senior Society and as such cater for members in countries that do not have a Clan MacLeod Society.
Aims and Objectives
The Society encourages all those interested in MacLeod heritage to meet socially and to pursue historical, genealogical, literary and cultural interests related to the Clan. The Society is also able to provide charitable support in certain circumstances through the Agnes MacLeod Memorial fund.
The Agnes MacLeod Memorial Fund
The Agnes MacLeod Memorial Fund is a registered charity administered by the Society providing grants to women resident in Scotland who were born MacLeod (or whose mothers were born MacLeod) and who are in need of financial assistance owing to sickness, advanced age or limited means. For further information or to nominate a potential beneficiary, please contact the fund secretary, Linda Orr: info@agnesmacleod.org.
Events and Publications
Regular events include an annual Dinner in February, a picnic in August and a Lunch with the AGM in November. Each member receives, twice yearly, the full colour Clan MacLeod Magazine. The Society also issues an occasional Newsletter, The MacLeod Light. The Clan MacLeod Society of Scotland hosts the quadrennial Gathering and Parliament in Skye when MacLeods from all over the world come together for a week of events. ACMS sponsors other books and publications.
History
The Clan MacLeod is descended from a Norseman called Leod who took possession of Dunvegan Castle and extensive lands in the Hebrides around 1200. The Clan evolved branches and now there are three Chiefs: Harris, Lewis, and Raasay. The Castle is still the home of a MacLeod Chief (of Harris), currently Hugh Magnus MacLeod of MacLeod, 30th Chief. Chief Torquil Donald of the Lewes (Lewis) and Chief Roderick John of Raasay reside in Australia. In the 21st century, Chief Hugh holds more land than any other clan chief, a testament to his ancestors’ astute politicking throughout the turbulent history of the Highlands and Scotland. Dunvegan Castle is the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland and is the top tourist attraction on the Isle of Skye. Visiting MacLeods are invited to sign their special visitors’ book.
Clans today
Many Scottish clans have societies. Clan MacLeod is affiliated to the Association of Highland Clans and Societies (AHCS). The clans assemble annually in July at the Inverness Highland Games.
Septs
Not just MacLeods are MacLeods! See the main ACMS pages for a list of the families or septs that are part of Clan MacLeod.
