New South Wales
This society was founded in the 1950s following the Australian visits of the Chief, Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod. The founding president was Bruce D MacLeod of Neutral Bay, New South Wales, who was the inaugural National Coordinator of the CMS in Australia for many decades. Bruce, as a Talisker MacLeod, wrote the book Everyone has a Granny Called MacLeod and has published a detailed genealogy of the MacLeods of Talisker. The society has a major role in Scottish affairs in New South Wales, Queensland and ACT. We attend Highland Gatherings, and own Clan functions in regional areas of the state. President Peter MacLeod produces a very fine newsletter every quarter, which is well illustrated with images of local and international clan activities.
There is a Clan MacLeod Pipe Band, which wears the green MacLeod of Dunvegan and Harris Tartan. Pipe Major is Bruce Wheatley, and information is on their website.
The Sydney Maritime Museum exhibits a wonderfully restored barque, which sails under the name of the James Craig, formerly named the Clan MacLeod. This magnificent vessel moors in the famous Darling Harbour near the Australian National Maritime Museum.
