Red whortleberry

The Clan plant badge of MacLeod of Harris (Siol Tormod) is juniper. The Clan plant badge for the MacLeods of Lewis and Raasay (Siol Torquil) is red whortleberry. Clan badges are usually worn on a bonnet behind the crest badge, or attached at the shoulder of a lady’s tartan sash. They likely originated as a way of showing Clan loyalty or affiliation by people who could not afford a ‘crest’ badge.
