Young MacLeods at Parliament, since 1965
A key part of Parliament are the activities of the North Room Group (NRG), where young people make lifelong friendships and volunteer to support the Parliament programme. Several of this year's NRGers have parents who participated in the programme when they were young.
During the 2006 Parliament, the NRG will meet from 22 July to 5 August. NRG is open to members of the Clan MacLeod Society, aged 18 to 25 years. NRGers are expected to make their own travel arrangements to and from Parliament. Accommodation and local transportation is paid for by the ACMS, but cooking and chores are communal tasks and all NRGers are expected to pull their weight. The ACMS also will make a cash donation to cover a portion of the meal costs. Details of this year's program can be found in this downloadable leaflet for NRG 2006.
Working week: Saturday 22 July to Saturday 29 July
This year the NRG Working Week service project will be performed on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. The project will be directed by the North Harris Trust. Accommodation will be at the Scaladale Outdoor Centre near Ardvourlie, Harris. Young MacLeods should plan to arrive on Harris on Saturday 22 July. It is possible to reach Harris from regularly scheduled ferry services from Uig in Skye and Ullapool on the Scottish mainland. There are public transportation connections to these ferries from major Scottish cities (which can in turn be reached easily from London). If you have questions about how to make your travel arrangements, refer to the Traveling to Parliament webpage, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Parliament week: Saturday 29 July to Saturday 5 August
At the end of the service project on Harris, the NRG will be transported down to Dunvegan on Skye. During Parliament week in Dunvegan, the NRG will take part in Clan activities and assist with running Parliament. Accommodation will be at the hostel/bunk rooms at the Dunvegan Hotel, with additional housing available in the Dunvegan area if required. Kitchen facilities will be available at the Village Hall for evening meals. The NRG is responsible for preparation and cleanup of its own meals.
